Species of Concern in Iowa
|
|||||
|
As bellweathers for water quality, interest in Iowa dragonfly
populations is just beginning to grow. The Department of Natural
Resources is now including the state of odonata in their long-range
wildlife planning. Based on data currently available, some species
are identified as "species of concern". Since Iowa has
so little public land, some of these species may well have healthy
populations in unknown areas. Over time this list will no doubt
change. We have placed these
into three groups as defined by NatureServe status codes for Iowa.
Species of Unknown StatusThese are species which have been seldom recorded anywhere in the state. They may be true vagrants or small populations may exist somewhere. Stripe-winged Baskettail (Epitheca costalis) is certainly established in southern Iowa, but more work is necessary to determine its status.
Critically ImperiledWith very few records, these species may be in grave danger of disappearing from the state. However, more field work could also help bump some of them up to S2 status.
ImperiledThese species are on the cusp. Perhaps more populations will be found. If not, these species are in danger of becoming extirpated.
